Serie A side Fiorentina’s midfield outcast Ricardo Montolivo was thought to be heading to the English Premier League this January. Both Manchester United and Arsenal bosses Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were believed admirers of the 27-year-old tactician.
However, it now looks like both EPL sides are set to miss out with Italian giants AC Milan seemingly taking the lead in the chase for the player’s signature this summer.
United having been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League so early this season and Milan already having hammered Arsenal 4-0 at home in the first leg of the knockout stages has most likely helped the Rosseneri push to the top of the list.
TalkSport is claiming that sources from Florence based Italian radio station Lady Radio are saying Montolivo is already believed to have completed negotiations to move to the San Siro this summer on a four year contract with Milan.
Another claim from TalkSport has AC Milan locked in a transfer battle over Benfica’s Spanish midfield maestro Javi Garcia.
It is believed that the player would cost either side upwards of £17 million to pry him away from the Portuguese league leaders. However, the attraction of either the English Premier League or the Italian Serie A is likely to make his decision for him to leave.
The rest is likely up to which side can offer either the better wages or the best playing time assurances. Milan has an aging midfield and the 25-year-old could slot right into the side where as United have both age and youth but are stretched thin due to constant injury trouble.
It will be an interesting battle this summer to be sure.
