Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez to replace Andre Villas-Boas at Chelsea?

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has been listed as a potential replacement for Chelsea’s Andre Villas-Boas should Roman Abramovich lose complete faith in his high priced summer managerial acquisition.

The Daily Mirror reports that the former La Liga and UEFA Champions League winning manager is a shoe in as a possible quick fire appointment.

The appointment of Benitez would crush the hearts of many Liverpool fans as his support of the club even since his exit has been nothing short of exemplary from backing the players to the famous Hillsborough 96 groups over the fans lost all those years ago in the horrific stadium disaster.

It has been no secret however of the Spanish leader’s desire to return to management in the English Premier League and a chance to manage another high profile team would certainly be enticing.

Benitez would also be able to team up with his once mighty prodigy signing, Fernando Torres who saw the best years of his English career under Benitez when at Anfield and only left the club after his manager did so. The Daily Mail believes the chance of the manager being able to get the best out of Chelsea’s most expensive player is a key link to him being given the opportunity if it arises.

With Torres facing so much stick from the fans and the media and having been threatened of the axe even in the last few days according to the Guardian he would probably love nothing more than to be reunited with his old boss.

Since leaving Inter Milan after six months in 2010 Benitez has been out of a job but still is believed to be a resident of Merseyside. If he were to join Chelsea he would possibly be labeled as big of a Liverpool traitor as Torres was when he made the move to Stamford Bridge.

Benitez had a great rivalry with the Blues during his time in England and perhaps his record against them is what could be promoting the club’s Russian owner to take a closer look at the possibility to bringing him to the helm at Stamford Bridge should he sack his current underachieving boss.
