Manchester United have had dominate runs in the English Premier League this season but a year racked with injuries and inconsistency at key times has seen them eliminated from all of their major competitions this season.
The Red Devils made a group stage exit from the UEFA Champions League after having been the runners-up last season and are now hoping to salvage something from Europe’s second tier competition, the UEFA Europa League.
Along with their non-ceremonial exorcism from the UCL they were knocked out of the English League Cup in the quarter-finals by Npower Championship side Crystal Palace. They then were also eliminated from the English Football Associations Cup in the 4th round by Liverpool in what has been a frustrating year for the club all around.
There is still a chance they can pull off some key victories and hold off currently third placed Tottenham and beat Manchester City to the EPL title but that is still weeks away from knowing how real that possibility truly is.
For now club manager Sir Alex Ferguson has to start laying his ground plans for a continued infusing of new talent over the summer.
The Daily Mirror has linked United as having joined in the pursuit of Borussia Dortmund ace Mario Goetze alongside the likes of EPL rival Arsenal and Italain Serie A giants Juventus.
It is rumored that Dortmund value Goetze at no less than £33 million according to Goetze’s agent Dirk Hebel who claims contact with both Juventus and Manchester United in the Daily Mail:
“I think in Europe all the top clubs are interested in Mario.
“I can confirm that I have had contact with Juventus and Manchester United but not only them. I don’t know if he will go away after this season, you should as Borussia.”
United are also being linked with a move for Valencia center back Adil Rami. The 26-year-old was sold to the Spanish club from defender French League champions Lille OSC last January but spent the remainder of the year in France.
His performance in Valencia’s victory over English side Stoke City in their first leg tie of the UEFA Europa League was another shining example of his talents.
The Daily Mail reports that he is likely to be valued around £20 million to United or any other club that comes calling which could put United on a different path altogether.
Lastly Sir Alex looks to have joined local rivals Manchester City in the race for Derby County youngster Will Hughes according to TalkSport.
Hughes is considered Derby’s brightest young talent and the two EPL giants are hoping to secure a deal for the youngster and then more than likely loan him back to Derby for the following season to keep his development on track.
