Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli is not one that is left out of the media on to many occasions. However, for once it appears it is not a youthful or out of place antic of his own that has his name plastered across the news headlines.

The young Italian is claiming that he was racially abused by the fans of FC Porto on February 16, 2012 during the two club’s UEFA Europa League first leg tie in Portugal.

TheTelegraph has reported that City have indeed filed paper work with UEFA over the incident and have quoted Balotelli’s club teammate Yaya Toure in support of the said claim of abuse:

‘I heard something.

‘That’s why we like the Premier League, it never happens there. Maybe other countries don’t expect black players.

‘I think in future it will be okay, they will change their minds and the game will become more open.

‘Football is football and the fans come to enjoy the game, and we don’t want things like this to happen.’

It is unfortunate that after such a major amount of focus has been on the racial abuse problem in England between the controversial incidents that have taken place. The most talked about involves Liverpool FC striker Luis Suarez and Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

City manager Roberto Mancini was also quick to comment on the incident in Metro but believes that his player will be strong enough emotionally to overcome any offense:

‘I didn’t hear the noise, because I was concentrating on the game,’ he said.

‘I think Mario Balotelli and Yaya Toure are too strong [to be affected].

‘I think this provocation can happen every game. For this reason I spoke with Mario before the game. I said, “Mario, think and play, think what you should do during the game. Forget other things.” I think only this is important.’

The continued racial issues around European football continues to be a major concern of both UEFA and the world’s football governing body FIFA and will not likely cease to be an issue for many years to come however unfortunate that may be.
