Javi Martinez burst onto the international football scene with his impressive performances for the Spanish Under-21 squads throughout various FIFA and UEFA football competitions over the past three years.
Martinez was part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup winning side and his most recent crowning achievement was to captain his Under-21 national side to the 2011 UEFA Youth European Championship.
Not only has he been outstanding for his country but he has blossomed to prominence for his Spanish La Liga based side Athletic Bilbao in the heart of Spain’s Basque country.
The young player’s versatility is one of the many traits that have him so hotly followed as he has played everywhere from the center of defense to his current primary location of a holding midfielder in Spain.
Manchester City are reportedly looking to offer anywhere from £25 million to £34 million for his services in order to bring him to Etihad Stadium and the English Premier League according to the Daily Mail.
In a direct quote to English news outlet The Sun a Athletic Bilbao representative said simply:
“We don’t want Javi to go — only an incredible offer could change our minds.”
Manchester City could be in position to make such an incredible offer as the impending sale of Carlos Tevez should net hopefully around £25 million for the club and the sale of several more fringe players in the summer could provide enough capital in the lines of the English Football Associations Financial Fair Play policy.
Another English new outlet in the Daily Mirror is also claiming Manchester City’s interest in the player but believe the massive £34 million release clause in the player’s contract is likely to scupper a move unless the Manchester Club sacrifice another important player such as Dutch holding midfielder Nigel de Jong.
